A peek backstage reveals how much handcraftsmanship, precision and high-tech goes into a Silhouette

5000 Kilos of ultra-light patented synthetic material, SPX, is incorporated into rimless eyewear by Silhouette every year. That’s enough to fill 45 bathtubs. The colorless SPX granules are the raw material for manufacturing the synthetic temples. Mixing equipment is used to carefully combine these with exclusive color pigments. Depending on the style of eyewear, the temples are produced by either fully automated or manual spray casting. The innovative sandwich injection molding technology allows synthetic materials of differing hardness to bond together: in this way, the hard SPX of the core that gives the temple its required strength can be coated with softer synthetic SPX material, which, on the other hand, renders the temple soft to the touch and supple. Nose pads are also made from this first-class synthetic compound, guaranteeing maximum wearing comfort.

80 hours – the time needed to polish the eyewear components with sanding granulate and make the surface flawless. Vibrating, rotary polishing machines use sanding particles, such as nutshell granules or special polishing additives,
to remove sharp edges and ensure an even, shiny surface. However, a Silhouette would not be an outstanding designer accessory without a hand polish and a simultaneous inspection of all parts by a trained pair of eyes. Last but not least, various refining processes and decorative touches provide each temple with its own, individual look.

1500 employees the world over are committed to the unique quality of the Silhouettes that they produce, each and every day. When all components of a Silhouette are ready, they are intricately assembled by hand into a perfectly formed design accessory. The tiniest pieces of metal, such as an eyewear’s nose piece, are welded together or soldered by induction. Employees require extreme precision and manual dexterity for this task. When it comes to assembling the synthetic temples, employees need utmost precision to apply the glue, which has been specially developed for Silhouette’s requirements. This is the key to turning the passionately produced components into a masterpiece.

The new look Silhouette.com website is here. The focus is on what is most important to the customer: the product selection and retailer search. An intelligent filter function and Silhouette iMirror enable customers to make a reliable choice in advance. The aim: buyers can try out the entire Silhouette product range around the clock and from the comfort of their own home. Before visiting an eye-care professional for the first time, they already have an idea of which eyewear model meet with their expectations.

Arnold Schmied, Executive Board Member Silhouette, says: “We know that it is much easier to assess the design over the internet than the material and processing. This is why we attach great importance to the entire process and an interplay of the real and virtual world: ideal information on the web in advance and then the customer’s enthusiasm when they have the eyewear in their hands for the first time”.

Finding an eye-care professional should be as easy as possible. As such, the retailer search feature on Silhouette.com has been fundamentally revised and now offers an innovative map view and all of the contact details for the identified eye-care professional, based on the user’s location. The expert answers about health and look have also been given a brand new appearance. The ‘Look’ section includes suggestions from Silhouette customers about how to care for the eyes and about individual styling.

In the trailer about the website, Arnold Schmied explains the philosophy behind the new Silhouette.com. There is also an overview of all features and options on the website. Take a look, it’s worth it. Watch Trailer

Since 2003, the Design for Asia Award is a prize for the most influential designs in Asia. For the first time, the Austrian eyewear brand Silhouette is among the winners of this internationally renowned award, which was celebrated and presented in Hong Kong at the beginning of December.
The award for the category of Fashion Accessories went to Silhouette SPX Art, which was already honoured in Europe with the if Design Award. It impressed the jury with its reduced form, high level of expressiveness and the masterful interpretation of a casual lifestyle.

All product submissions – there were around 720 this year – are evaluated by an international jury in a multi-stage process governed by a strict catalogue of criteria. The most influential factors were overall appearance, “Asian Style” and commercial success. SPX Art met those criteria to win the Design for Asia Bronze Award.

“The Design for Asia Award is a very special honour, for it is our first in Asia, a market that is becoming more and more relevant for us. That’s why it’s even more important to produce designs that also reflect the Asian lifestyle,” says Arnold Schmied, co-owner and Chair of Silhouette International, where he leads the departments of Design, Brand and Sales.

Gerhard Fuchs, whose eyewear designs have already received numerous awards, is thrilled about the news: “When creating eyewear, we first think about those who are going to don it and their satisfaction with the models. Winning a prize like the Design for Asia Award is a wonderful confirmation for our efforts.”

Silhouette Collection Titan Glam

One trend that will continue to grow in 2012 is accessory eyewear. These are glasses donned for special occasions that, like jewellery, adorn the wearer’s face. They underline personality while distinguishing themselves with strong individuality. The vintage look is a thing of the past. Elegance is now embodied in a new look with the highest quality materials. The yearn for individuality, which is growing stronger and stronger every year, is promoted by the opportunity to design each pair of rimless eyewear to match one’s own ideas and needs.

Silhouette’s Titan Glam is the perfect accessory for ladies who have style and a sense for purist luxury not worn on the outside, but rather expressed through the selection of materials and colours. “Titan Glam is the perfect accessory for ladies with an unmistakable sense for purist luxury and simple elegance”, claims Angela Strecker, a designer at Silhouette specialised in eyewear from the Luxury Lifestyle World. The idea for a design is often found in simple muses. Strecker, for example, was inspired by the interplay between two water drops reflecting each other, fondly interpreting them as the central design element for Titan Glam.

This design’s elegance is underlined in the selection of colours and materials. The interplay of precious metals with surfaces elaborated in a plethora of individual work steps – many of which are realised by hand – along with Silhouette’s soft, pleasant to touch SPX plastic turns Titan Glam into a statement. The elegance and excitement in Titan Glam can particularly be seen in the clever contrasts in effects; in colours – like the two-colour Black-Red Flamenco model – as well as in materials, found in both gloss and matt, imparting high quality elegance to Titan Glam.

The four models in Silhouette’s Titan Glam Collection will be available in four colour variations from selected stores around the globe as of January 2012 – Brown-Green Marble, Black-Red Flamenco, Gold-Silver Sunrays and Silver-Gold Moonlight. Like all Silhouette Collections, Titan Glam is also crafted in Austria in over 200 work steps using the highest quality materials.

Silhouette collection Titan Impressions

Titan Impressions

Clear forms and reduction to what is essential brought together with unmistakable feel and warm appeal – that could be a description of the minimalism of our century, which has also brought with it a renaissance of values. While the reduced style of the 90s had a cold feel to it, craftsmanship by hand, materials with a natural appearance, individuality, warm colours and soft surfaces are now receiving a new level of emphasis.

Those who don Silhouette Titan Impressions know what they are wearing: Design from Austria, circa 80% crafted by hand and specifically oriented toward the needs of individuals. This combination of universality and individuality means that Titan Impressions eyewear can be worn all day long – ladies and gentlemen alike. “My idea was to create eyewear that could be put on early in the morning and is not removed again until shortly before going to bed. A perfect companion for the whole day, without being a burden” says Gerhard Fuchs, Titan Impressions designer.

Colour and material accents are used quite deliberately. Titan Impressions’ hinges nourish tension via matt-gloss effects, the contrast between the materials high-tech titanium and SPX, interplays of colours such as Black-Red, Violet-Green and Gold-White. One finds pleasant surprises in the small prints and structures along the interior of the hinges. These seamless, strictly geometrical design elements are oriented on impressionist pointillism and are what give Titan Impressions its name.

The twelve models in twelve colour variations from the Silhouette Titan Impressions collections will be available from select stores worldwide starting in January 2012. Like all Silhouette collections, Silhouette Titan Impressions are crafted in Austria using the highest quality materials in more than 200 work steps, circa 80% of which are realised by hand.

“When cooking, this means for me to also tell a story. This is, however, only possible if you know the people behind the products”

The Gourmet Chef from South Tyrol is head of the kitchen at Restaurant St. Hubertus in Hotel Rosa Alpina and made the village of St. Kassian one of the world’s best addresses for gourmet cuisine.

For five years his Silhouette eyewear has been his companion – sometimes even in his dreams: “My Silhouette is so light that I often fall asleep still wearing it. Only the next morning I realise that I did wear it all night through”. As with his eyewear, Niederkofler focuses on the essential while cooking: “The quality of the products is the beginning and the end when it comes to freshness and taste”.

Niederkofler was awarded two Michelin Stars and still remains true to South Tyrol’s cuisine in the present day. His most recent cookbook “Mein Südtirol” also shows his love for a mix of traditional dishes with Mediterranean cuisine. By chance, the ardent globetrotter came back home after having worked in Germany, Switzerland, London, New York and Milan amongst others. Up to now, travelling has remained his big passion: “It gives me food for thought, makes me satisfied or unsatisfied. There are so many impressions to take home.”

Christmas is the time of love, friendship and family. Express your feelings. The “Letters of Passion” project by Silhouette brings your thoughts to paper.

Send your message to us by December 13 and we will surprise your loved ones with a handwritten Christmas letter! But remember: the number of letters is “strictly limited”. At www.silhouette.com/crystals, you can write new letters and look through photos of “Letters of Passion” that have already been written.

Since May 2011, Silhouette Eyewear has been making it possible to formulate letters to people who are very close to the author’s heart in a very special, award-winning online project. These are then lovingly written by hand, placed in an envelope and posted. The idea is part of the Silhouette “Crystals” campaign focusing on the new luxury models from the Austrian eyewear brand presented last spring.

Surprise your loved ones with a hand-written message. The very personal holiday greeting, presented by Silhouette’s Crystal Collection!

On Thursday October 27, the 52nd annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was held in the “Yachting Capital of the World“. Premiere eyewear brand Silhouette made a splash with sponsorship of Superyachts.com’s party aboard 48m Christensen superyacht Remember When to debut their SUN Collection 2012.

Silhouette Eyewear was among fellow luxury partners such as Aston Martin, Magellan Jets, Gerber Group and Vanderbilt Residences and owner of Remember When, John Rosatti, for this year’s kickoff event.

Aboard the yacht’s second and third levels, guests and members of the press mingled, dined and sipped Silhouette cocktails such as Silhouette Specs on the Beach, while trying on the SUN Collection 2012 designs inspired by Van Dutch and Wally Hermes Yachts. Guests received chic Silhouette branded beach bags and towels along with a crystal “S“ pendant while one lucky winner took home a his and hers set of sunglasses as well!

Every tiny detail plays a critical role when it comes to manufacturing eyewear. Only when all the components are in perfect synchronisation is the eyewear fit for the eyes. But how does a piece of metal or synthetic material become an eyewear temple with a form and function that needs to live up to the highest expectations? We take a backstage look to see how a Silhouette is created.

0.6 millimetres – the smallest dimension of a hingeless titanium temple at its thinnest part – the spring zone, which ensures optimum hold and results in maximum wearing comfort. High-tech titanium and the exclusive synthetic SPX material produce ultra-thin, extremely supple temples that are renowned for being highly resistant and kind to the skin – without relying on any screws or hinges.

5,000 metres of high-tech titanium goes into Silhouette eyewear every year. A mountaineer would need to climb Mount Everest 55 times before he reached this distance. The titanium wire, which is purchased in huge coils from Silhouette’s preferred suppliers, is first cut into the required lengths. They are shaped into various calibres in high precision reducing machines before employees accurately measure them to within 1,000th of a millimetre. These will later become temples, bridges and tiny parts, for the screwless hinges, for example.

450 tonnes – the pressure exerted by the hydraulic press that stamps the short pieces of titanium wire into future temples or bridges. Finally, punching tools provide the temples and bridges with their exact form and the future design article begins to take on shape.

Stay tuned! Part II of Silhouette in Detail will follow soon.

Lidewij Edelkoort is probably the world’s most famous trend scout. In the interview with Silhouette she speaks about upcoming trends in eyewear.

What trends in eyewear and sunglasses can we expect in the upcoming years?
Eyewear will always follow its own trends and continue to develop in shape and design. At the moment, we can see an interesting trend: lenses of sunglasses have evolved from small to large and even extra large.

Does this mean that eyewear trends are not based on current fashion styles?
Of course eyewear and sunglasses are associated with the current spirit of the times, just like any other item. Nevertheless, not taking into account shape and colour, an interesting development can be seen: sunglasses are not only used as an accessory but also as a protective mask. You can use them as protection against the sun or hide behind dark glasses – which many VIPs like to do – but you also can set an example. Sunglasses have advanced into a fashion statement.

Does this mean that sunglasses are becoming an increasingly important accessory?
From a historical point of view, I have never experienced a time in fashion where sunglasses and corrective eyewear have enjoyed as high a status as they do today. Indeed, I am sure that they will continue to gain importance as an accessory. There will be a time when people will not only carry one pair of sunglasses but maybe even two or three.

In this context, how important is eyewear in relation to the rest of the outfit?
Previously the saying was it doesn’t matter what you wear as long as you wear good shoes. This saying is still true today and goes even further: fancy eyewear has become as important as good shoes. As long as the accessories are good, meaning exclusive watches, eyewear and shoes, the clothes can come from the flea market.

What kind of accessories do you personally prefer?
I like eyewear. In particular, I like eyewear that also works as sunglasses because people don’t even notice that I’m wearing prescription eyewear and I like that. Of course, it is also important for me that the eyewear weighs very little.

Since 1998, Lidewij Edelkoort illustrates in her Bloom Magazine how nature has influenced fashion and lifestyle trends.

On the occasion of this year’s optical fair SILMO in Paris Silhouette organised the first lunch symposium dedicated to the topic „The perception of faces with eyewear“.

The symposium was attended by ECPs as well as trade editors, who were impressed by the results of the study about the perception of faces with and without glasses, conducted by the University of Vienna.

Prof. Helmut Leder, one of the most renowned experts in the field of face and aesthetics research in the psychology of perception, introduced and explained the results of the study that will be published in the Swiss Journal of Psychology very soon.

Leder also discussed the various aspects of beauty with world renowned make up artist Mary Greenwell, who underlined his results from a practical standpoint. Both of them agreed that rimless glasses make faces less distinctive from faces without eyewear, which often means more attractive.

How do eyeglasses influence the perception of personality? A recent scientific study focused, for the first time, on the issue of rimless eyewear in this regard. The results of three experimental settings revealed: rimless eyewear supports facial recognition. Rimless eyewear appears attractive and rimless eyewear bestows more trustworthiness.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Leder, renowned expert in the field of face and aesthetics research in the psychology of perception, conducted the study entitled “The impact of eyewear characteristics on the impression made by faces and perception of faces” with his team at the University of Vienna. His study is the first in the field that sheds light on differences between framed and rimless eyewear.

When we look at a face we immediately analyse several kinds of information. Who is this person? How old? How healthy? Man or woman? Is it similar to me? Different? Is the person attractive – can I trust her? For these processes, the eye region is especially important.

Previous studies have already discovered that harmonious, average features are perceived as beautiful and attractive. Glasses, as a deviation from the norm, lead to expectations of higher intelligence, trustworthiness, diligence and reliability.

The findings of the experiments suggest that rimless glasses subtly combine both perceptions. They imperceptibly draw attention to the important eye area and in a positive way combine aspects of success and intelligence with attractiveness. As a fascinating result of Leder’s experiments it was found that rimless eyewear made faces less distinctive – a component of beauty – and particularly increased perceived trustworthiness.

November in Wiesbaden.
